2018 Maxime Graillot 'Domaine des Lises' Crozes-Hermitage, Rhône valley

Maxime is the son of Alain Graillot, two of the most iconic producers in the Rhône Valley. When you drink a Graillot, you know you are drinking a Graillot! All the fruit for this wine is estate-grown, single vineyard and on the southern most-easterly part of the appellation. Soils are of gravel and alluvial, low in clay but fast draining. Vines were planted in the 1980s and are organically farmed. For years now, that we have been huge fan of these wines.

Fermentation is done naturally with small whole bunch, less indeed than what his dad was doing. 2018 was fermented in concrete vats and then racked into old Burgundy barrels, not to impart oak aromas but to micro-oxigenat the wines.

Why do we like it?

This is a very refined Syrah, with a pronounced savoury profile, on the nose a mixture of tart and ripe black fruit, a slight cured meat hint and accentuated black peppercorns notes – so characteristic from these guys. On the palate, is fine, elegant, a little spicy, with firm tannins and an incredibly long smoky finish. Flavour wise, dark berries, licorice, exotic spice and even a sense of lavender.
