2020 Bass Phillip Since 1979 Pinot Noir

Bass Phillip was founded by Mr Phillip Jones in 1979 at the age of 32. He told us, years ago, that he had planted Cabernet Sauvignon in the early days because his favourite wine was a classified growth Bordeaux and he wanted to replicate it. Fortunately, or unfortunately, not a single grape was grown. He then decided to replace the Cabernet Sauvignon with Pinot Noir and what a fantastic decision he made!

Bass Phillip has been organically farmed since 1993, and biodynamic since 2002. Today, the estate is run by Jean-Marie Fourrier, a very talented Burgundian winemaker that has done an internship with the legendary Henri Jayer. Henri was a French vintner who, it is said, revolutionized Viticulture and winemaking in Burgundy.

 

Why do we like it?

We love all of the Bass Philip range, from their 'Since 1979', 'Estate' and 'Premium' offerings, each are incredibly different. It is created with the same attention to detail, the same winemaking and this wine offers a very good entry into Bass Phillip wines. It is not as complex as its bigger "brothers", but it will certainly have you enjoying every sip of it. It is a Pinot selection of older barrels form the Leongatha Vineyard which at the time of blending didn’t make the grade for the Estate Pinot. Wine stayed in barrel for 14 months, until it is simply decanted by gravity off lees from a spigot inserted into the bottom of the barrel to tank.
