2019 Le Chiuse Rosso di Montalcino

Le Chiuse is one of the most historically important vineyards in Montalcino. It is where the first clone of Brunello (Sangiovese) was ever grown. It is still part of the Biondi Santi family who are credited with the introduction of Brunello two centuries ago. The vineyards have always provided a significant portion of the Riserva wines for Biondi-Santi. In 1993, Simonetta Valiani, the great-granddaughter of Ferruccio Biondi-Santi regained full control of the vineyards and with her husband Nicolo Magnelli they started to produce wine under the Le Chiuse label.

Why do we like it?

The estate is very small, with only 7 hectares of organic vineyards. Altitude and schist soils make the Rosso fresh and complex, not without the potential to age. The estate selects bigger clusters of Sangiovese for its Rosso in order to minimize its tannin extraction compared to Brunello. This 2019 shows a graceful structure, with a very well-integrated fresh acidity. Vinous in the glass, it's full of intense cranberry, redcurrant and violet, with a super-fresh character on the palate of savoury herbs and cedar, then slightly balsamic on the finish.
