2020 Alfer Hölle “Ullie Stein” Riesling, Mosel

At Alfer Hölle, all wines are produced by using traditional, sustainable methods which require an insane amount of manual labour. Start by imagining incredibly steep vineyards in which all harvests are hand-made, up and down the valley. All they produce is 6.5 hectares of steep vineyards which grows mostly Riesling (about 80%).  When it comes to vine age, these vines are around 60 years old, yielding around 5000l/ ha - that is tiny!

The wine itself is fresh, zesty, with clean acidity, plenty green apple, lemon and lime.  We also tasted some crushed spearmint and pannacota, There is a beautiful bouquet to this wine with aromas of honeysuckle, elderflower and jasmine. Indeed, a very pretty white wine with a slight spritzy sensation, especially at this young age.

Why do we like it?

Mosel is indeed my favourite wine region in the world for white wine.  Riesling is the major grape planted here, in these classic steep slaty vineyards which results in light and mineral wines with relatively low alcohol levels at high extract levels. This Riesling you can certainly keep for several years to come, at least 7-10 years, because of its high acidity.  Though don’t hesitate to open it now and enjoy the full fragrance of this wonderful wine.  You may want to decant it and even double decant it, to allow for SO2 to vanish and finally have a pure expression of this incredible Riesling.
