Quinta do Vallado dates back 300 years. Awarded 1 of 100 best vineyards in the world and is located on the banks of the river Corgo, a tributary of the Douro. Founded by the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and remains to this day in the hands of her descendants. She, like Max Schubert in Australia was the one that believed in table red wines from the region as opposed of only Port wines, so she started by paying more attention to quality and enforced it in her vineyards, several years later, the most iconic Portuguese wine call Barca Velha was born.
Why do we like it?
Brings great memories from a week trip to Douro Valley while working in London, for the 10 years anniversary of the Douro Boys. It was a full on week with tastings, visits, dinners, parties and connecting with great people. About this wine... it is concentrated, with mature red and black fruit aromas such as strawberry, raspberry and dark plum. There is a hint of violets and 'Esteva' aroma, a local bush that grows wild in the vineyard. It is full bodied, but elegant. All harvests, as you can imagine are done by hand, machinery is impossible as vineyards are so steep.
Age range of the vines is between 60 and 100 years of age, you can now imagine how underrated these wines are at this price point…
