NV Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Sainte-Anne Brut

Alexandre Chartogne is one of our favourite small growers in Champagne. He has inherited a tiny 14-ha domaine from his parents in 2006. His vineyards are in Merfy, north of Reims, where there is a layer of glacial debris and sandy clay over the chalk. The estate is meticulously cared for, there is no chemicals, herbicides or insecticides being used, cultivation is only when required, sheep and chickens roam the vineyards and organic compost is used where necessary. All effort is on maximising life in the soil. The wines are fermented separately by grape variety, by terroir and with increasing use of oak.

Why do we like it?

The first Champagne we tried from Alexandre was the cuvée Sainte-Anne a few years ago and it was love at first sight! It contains 40% réserve wines with maturation on lees for 36 months. A subtle yet soft and elegant Champagne, with tangy green apple, lime and almond flavour. It's a Champagne full of energy with real brightness and chalky grip on the finish.
