2011 Cesar Principe Tempranillo Cigales

“I strive to unlock the magic of the vine,” says Ignacio when talking about his dear vineyard. Bodegas Cesar Principe is located in Cigales, a small, fast-rising region in northern Spain, just north of the well-known Ribera del Duero.  It’s higher in altitude and cooler than the region of Toro, with impressive average vine age. Traditionally, Tempranillo and Grenache are grown there mostly for the production of dry rosé wines, but fortunately for us, people like Ignacio Principe lead the revolution of wines of Cigales. A revolution, and evolution, that started in the 90s, when the traditional wineries of bulk wines were transformed into wineries focused on bottling wines of high quality. Today, the most influential national and international critics, as well as the most prestigious guides, give high scores to these wines.

Why do we like it?

Made from 70 to 100 year old vines of Tempranillo, this is wine-making as it should be. Ignacio is a hands-on producer. Not every winemaker is as comfortable with his hands in the soil. But then, not every winemaker is an artist. This wine has a great density and is certainly fit for the cellar. Intense fruit, lively acidity, and pleasing tannin all come together to deliver an explosion of flavours of ripe black fruits, coffee and spices with exceptional harmony.
