2011 La Rioja Alta ‘Gran Reserva 904’ Rioja

With its headquarters in the same location since the winery was built in 1890, in Haro, La Rioja Alta is one of the most traditional and leading bodegas (winery) in the region, making some of the most high-quality wines. Five Spanish growers, with origins in Basque country and Rioja, established the winery in 1890. This was a lucrative time for Rioja, as phylloxera had swept through Bordeaux and other French wine regions, leaving an opening in the marketplace for fine wine.

Why do we like it?

The Gran Reserva 904 is made from 89% Tempranillo and 11% Graciano grape and was aged for about 3 years in American oak barrels. Lots of succulent ripe strawberries and plum on the nose that comes with a scent of vanilla and tobacco. This is the archetype of traditional Rioja! There is almost a sweetness on the fruit, balanced by delightful freshness and savoury character.
