2016 Gini Contrada Salvarenza Vecchie Vigne, Soave Classico, Veneto

This may be of the most exciting Soave Classico we have ever come across. The Gini family can attest to over 400 years of vine-growing experience within the Veneto; however, it was only in the early 1980s that they set out on the path that led them to where they are today. It was at that time that Sandro Gini was introduced into the family business, and with him came the push to begin estate-bottling their production. Even from the early days, there was a push toward the minimal use of sulphur and a more natural approach in the vineyards, which today has evolved into fully organic and biodynamic practices, the use of ambient yeasts and a low level of intervention in the cellar.

Why do we like it?

The house style for the Soave Classico at Gini is of great purity, yet full of character, and with the ability to mature beautifully in the cellar, especially the cru Salvarenza, it is a single vineyard wine and probably the best they made.

This is a powerful, deep wine that comes from amazingly old vines of 100 years old, planted in volcanic soils throughout hillside vineyards at 150m above sea level. It has a rich bouquet of lemon peel, dried apricot and almond paste. It’s deeply textured with an almost oily feel and a touch of peach and mango.
