2019 Lark Hill, Gruner Veltliner, Canberra District

Lark Hill was established by Sue and David Carpenter in 1978, on the Lake George Escarpment in Canberra District. They left careers in scientific research to pursue their passion for winemaking. In 2002, their son Chris joined the winemaking team and is now the face of the winery. It is one of the highest and coldest vineyards in Australia, set at an altitude of 860 metres.

They also make delicate Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but we really love their Gruner Veltliner. Inspired by the Austrian’s style, they were not sure what the outcome would be but it made sense to plant Gruner in the cool conditions where the vineyard is located. So, in 2009, they produced Australia’s first Gruner Veltliner.

In the winery, they seek to translate the balance and vibrancy of the fruit to the wines using minimal intervention winemaking techniques and biodynamic farming to ensure that the wine reflects the geology, climate and location of the vineyard.

Why do we like it?

With flavours of fresh lemon, lime zest, fresh cut grass, green fig and white pepper, it’s a Gruner that almost looks like a Chablis with a light texture and plenty mineral acidity. Is a very versatile wine, it will work with a wide range of foods. It is delicious.
