2017 Domaine Rewa, Pinot Noir, Central Otago

Philippa Fourbet was raised on a farm just outside of Lawrence, Central Otago's first gold-rush town.  Well before it was ‘the right thing to do’, Philippa’s parents farmed holistically and with respect to the environment and animals, so it was perfectly natural for Philippa to follow suit in her vineyard. It dates back to 2010 when she was looking for a site to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay when she found a perfectly suitable 5.5 hectares of alluvial terraces, in which biodynamic practices are used.

The fruit is hand-harvested at pick quality. The two clones of Pinot Noir were fermented separately in open-top stainless fermenters with each compromising of approximately 11% whole bunch with the remainder of the fruit destemmed on top. Fermentation was carried out by indigenous yeasts until the wine was dry. The wine is gently matured in French Oak barriques for approximately 14 months, of which 23% was new oak.

Why do we like it?

Because the wine is fine and complex, it has a beautiful fragrant bouquet showing red cherry, roses, dark olive, nutmeg and earthy mushroom characters, leading to a juicy palate that is wonderfully rounded and elegant. It is refined and persistent with gorgeous spicy/savoury nuances. The wine is delicious right now with 5 years of age, but you could certainly age it longer.
