2018 Catena Zapata “Alta Angélica Zapata” Malbec, Mendoza

The family matriarch Angélica Zapata, was a fierce educator and headmistress of the local country school, instilled a culture of study, hard work and reflection on generations of the Catena family. Although Angélica died young, she transmitted to her children her vision that Argentina’s natural resources and that people were destined for greatness. Her son Nicolas Catena Zapata is responsible for the finding of the region of Mendoza, planting it and trusting only his guts when no one else believed it would work, to make today one some of the most brilliant Malbec in the world.

Why do we like it?

This wine has seen 50% new oak and it was bottled without fining or filtration, therefore expect a little bit of sediment and of course goes without saying, it must be decanted! It is deep and concentrated with bramble and blackcurrant fruit cut through by a racy breeziness of Christmas spices, forest floor and fresh herbs. Imposing tannins, lingering perfume and mouth-watering juiciness, this will age superbly. This wine is ready to drink but it will keep improving for several years to come, 5 to 10 easily. Decant as mentioned earlier, serve at 16 degrees in Bordeaux glasses.
