2018 Norton Ridge, Pinot Noir, Central Coast, California

It is not always easy to find a great Pinot Noir from the US to include in your Discovery Package as they tend to either be too expensive or not as good as we would like them to be but this month is different.  Norton Ridge is a collaboration between several producers and T.Edwards Wines, one of USA’s largest wholesalers. Their goal was simple, to create excellent, food-friendly wines at a reasonable price. To do this, they leveraged their decade-long relationships with grape growers in Sonoma and Napa counties. By starting with grapes of exceptional quality and having the freedom to blend grapes from different parts of California, they didn’t need to do much in the cellar. The wine didn’t see any new oak and very little intervention was needed.

Why do we like it?

Because when you use good grapes it’s easy to make good wines. Their Pinot Noir shows classic Russian River flavours of black cherry, cedar, and cloves, with soft tannins and a long, lovely finish. Far from the big, overworked wine that sometimes come from the US, this is a wine that emphasizes fruit quality and great purity of flavours.
