In 1978, Henri de Saint-Victor and his family settled in Provence and decided to restore the terraces of this extraordinary limestone terroir sitting at around 300 metres facing the Mediterranean sea. Nowadays, Chateau de Pibarnon is one of the most well regarded estate in Bandol, it's also one of the most beautiful with its natural amphitheatre and wonderful terraced vineyards. His son Eric is in charged since 2000 and has refined the style year after year. The Pibarnon vineyard sits at the highest point in the Bandol appellation, it allows for a longer, slow ripening period. The estate has an unique and rare soil called Trias, which is rich in mineral and retain water even in the driest years.
Why do we like it?
One of the reasons that Chateau de Pibarnon rouge is one of the classiest and greatest red of the appellation is the high percentage of Mourvedre in the blend. Most estate in Bandol will use a much higher amount of Grenache most of the time. It's a bottle with a strong Provencal identity, full-bodied with dark plum, licorice, balsamique and guarrigue. It's also richly textured with great density, depth and an incredible finesse for a wine of that region. It's a classic vin de garde, meaning it's build to age and improve with time, you can certainly enjoy it now but feel free to keep a few bottles in your cellar.
