2019 Pyramid Valley, Chardonnay, Canterbury, New Zealand

High altitude, limestone slopes, rocky and rich soils are arguably what Pyramid Valley declare makes them one of the most profound Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the world. Truthfully, they are indeed profound wines, with several layers of flavours, incredibly lively, but also expect something that is not conventional at all.

Their natural approach, hand crafting techniques and minimum intervention makes the wines very intense. For 15 years, Mike and Claudia were searching for the right spot to grow grapes, in 2000 they found it in Canterbury near Waikari. Biodynamics for them is to be in tune with each of their vineyards, literally listening to what they need based on soil type, site aspect, ecosystem, and local climate.

Why do we like it?

This wine has a slightly hazy appearance, with a golden hue. The nose is powerful, with aromas of ripe pear, ripe citrus such as orange zest and grapefruit.  After the second nose it reveals a savoury, fine minerality. The palate is always vibrant with a lot of tension and a lot of length.

This wine will certainly benefit for a few more years in the cellar. No need to chill too much when you open it, because of the rich, round palate, but also the fact that it is no finned or filtered.
