2018 Raventós i Blanc "Blanc de Blancs" Catalunya, Spain

The first time I tried this wine was in Spain at El Celler de Can Rocca in Girona, during a Sommelier training on my holidays from Dinner By Heston Blumenthal in London. While at this beautiful restaurant in Spain I learned about Raventós and their insane passion for great sparkling wines. They blend the classic native varietals: Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada. They are also known for practicing biodynamic viticulture and having deliciously intense wines that are full of character.

Look, this isn’t something new that just showed up in the market, this is a producer that has been around since 1497.  It is a winery with one of the longest documented winegrowing traditions in the world, that is 21 generations, but for all this time has only managed 90 hectares of their own vineyards… I’d call it passion.


Why do we like it?

Because this wine comes from a very old vineyard with over 40 years of age, Vinya del Llac. The age of the vines allows attainment of a structured, fresh and complex sparkling wine with an unmistakable length only seen in great sparkling.

We can’t think of a sparkling wine without recommending….perhaps a lobster roll. Served well chilled. This wine is ready to drink now, but will also improve over the next couple of years.
