2018 Rippon 'Emma's Block' Mature Vine Pinot Noir

When we think of Rippon, we think of the amazing wines produced at the estate but also to the incredible location of the winery. The vineyards are located on the shores of Lake Wanaka, with the small Ruby's Island out in front and the Southern Alps beyond, a landscape for postal card and maybe the most incredible vineyard location in the world.

Rippon has been looked after by the Mills family for four generations. It's a small farm of 15 hectares and one of the very first ones in Central Otago. The first vines were planted in 1982 by Rolfe Mills and a few years later, after spending some precious time in Burgundy working for some of the best producers of the region, his son Nick Mills took over, along with his siblings. The connection with the land is strong here, there is no irrigation at Rippon, neither commercial yeast, the vines benefit from high ultra violet light and long sunshine hours mitigated by the proximity of the Southern Alps.

Why do we like it?

Emma's Block is named after the great-great-great grandmother of the current generation of the Mills family. It is an unique parcel as it faces eastward on the lakefront where ancient clay reefs run literally through fine schist gravels.

The wine is pure and seductive offering a mix of red cherry and plum fruits along with rosemary and thyme. It's finely crafted with gentle tannins, silky mouthfeel and a touch of integrated cedar oak on the finish. The wine is made with zero filtration, indigenous yeasts and a tiny amount of sulphur at bottling. One of the greatest Pinot Noir made in New Zealand!
