2019 Koomilya ‘DC Block’ Shiraz, McLaren Vale

Koomilya was planted in 1962. The vineyard was named after a mid-19th century lugger that traversed between South Australia and Western Australia. It is this fact that leads to the connection with Stephen Pannell – the latter, the one from his youth, and the earlier the one he calls home today. Koomilya was Stephen first vineyard, and soon became his long-held vision to create a modern style of Shiraz, always made into single site wines. The DC Block – Don Cant – is a 47 year old plot grown in ancient dark slaty siltstone soils mixed with ironstone facing South East at an altitude of 108m.

Why do we like it?

Only 3080 bottles made in 2019! Flavor profile: it is big, with huge concentration of aromas of red and dark fruit, such as ripe mulberry, strawberries, black berries, fennel, and a descriptor of Stephen Pannell’s that we couldn’t resist adding, freshly polished boots! This tells you the story about the low rainfall, intense sunlight ripening. The wine is ready to drink, but… as Stephen says, have one today, and one every 5 years for the next 25 years.
