2019 Maude Estate, Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand

Vines planted in the steep north facing slopes of the Maungawera Valley in Central Otago, the 4 ha vineyard just outside of Wanaka, have become the pinnacle of the Maude Estate. Central Otago has certainly become a benchmark place for great Pinot Noir, the wines are dense, full bodied (for Pinot standard) and warm in alcohol with levels reaching over 14% abv commonly. The main reason for this is that the region is desertic and dry, with high levels of sunlight but with a cool climate. So, quite literally, the grapes are slow ripening while acquiring a lot of flavour and sugars.

Why do we like it?

We were mostly impressed with the exuberance of red fruit in this wine, with the ripe red cherry and strawberry aromas, a very concentrated rose floral, and very fine tannins, that were silky and well-integrated. The wine is ready to drink and may improve over the next couple of years. Serve at about 15 degrees.
