2020 Callejuela ‘Hornillos’ Palomino, Jerez, Spain

Callejuela is an incredible producer, founded in 1980 by Francisco Blanco Martinez. Comprise of 28 hectares of vineyards, planted on the classic albariza soils of the region of Jerez. Nowadays, Francisco's sons Pepe and Paco Blanco run the project, with 28 hectares of own vines across four pagos (single vineyard). In Sanluúcar de Barrameda, they have holdings in Pagos Callejuela and el Hornillo, while in Jerez they own parts of pagos Macharnudo and Añina. The family began to build up their own soleras over time in a humble bodega that only until recently expanded so as to increase the number of fermentation tanks and develop a line of non-fortified wines.

Why do we like it?

A lovely white wine made in Jerez, without the influence of ‘flor’ in the Pago de Hornillo. I will explain, traditionally, wines from the region are fortified, this one is not fortified, so it is a still white wine. Then, no ‘flor’ which is a yeast that creates on top of the wines in the region and protects them form oxidation, so in this case we have a conventional wine that is elegant, savoury, refreshing but also complex. Notes of minerality from the chalk, and lovely yellow flower, lemon zest and green apple coming through on the palate with a touch of bitterness and almond nuttiness to finish. It's an incredible wines to discover for wine aficionados!
