2020 Domaine Bersan ‘Montmains’ Premier Cru, Chablis, Burgundy

This family has been producing wine since the fifteenth century (1453). Today it is run by father and son – Jean-François and Pierre-Louis Bersan. They produce 20 hectares of vines, 13 hectares are whites, 7 hectares are red. It is not certified organic, but the conversion is being made as we speak. Their wines are typically lean, vinified in stainless steel, and matured in oak barrels for the age worthy cuvees. Vines are growing in the classic local soils, Portlandian and Kimmeridgian marls. The first typically makes the village, easier to drink wines, while the latter is where the Premier and Grand Crus grow, giving more intensely, minerally driven wines.

Why do we like it?

Montmains is a Premier Cru, and its name refers to a medium-sized mountain, "Montméen". It is located “strategically” alongside Butteaux and Forêts, three of the most prominent vineyards in Chablis. Montmains is typically colder than other crus leading to slightly later picked wines – giving its character! A wine that can be austere, always high in acidity, with granny smith apple like aromas and fresh lemon juice… with a few years in the bottle, it reveals a slight nut scent, as well as a strong sense of minerality with oyster shell, sea spray, fresh sour cream and the lightest touch of vanilla.
