2018 A & G Fantino Rosso dei Dardi, Piedmont

Two brothers, Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino, run the family estate in Monforte d'Alba. A little introduction should be made of Alessandro who used to make the wines at the legendary Cantina Bartolo Mascararello for most of his career before he decided to sell his shares to his daughter and went on to help his brother at the family estate. The two brothers own 8 hectares in the heart of the historic Bussia cru, one of Barolo's most famous areas. The Fantino holdings are concentrated exclusively in the "Dardi" section of Bussia, a hillside with perfect southeastern exposure, it is worth mentioning that the brothers are blessed with some of the oldest vines in the entire Barolo zone!

Why do we like it?

The Rosso di Dardi comes from their "young" Nebbiolo vines which are already 20+ years old! Pruned in an old style that is very labour intensive. The brothers farm and make wines in a very traditional and minimal interventionist way. It's an unique blend of three grapes, Nebbiolo brings structure and character, Dolcetto a lovely sweet fruit note and Freisa a touch of freshness. It is such a lovely red which demonstrates great lush red cherry, wild raspberry and violet character, the tannins are soft and juicy with a bright acidity which makes it easy to match with a wide range of cuisines. This may be one of the best value wine of 2022!
