Hochkirch is situated in the cool area of Henty in the south-west part of Victoria. John and Christian Nagorcka (father & son) only own a very small vineyard holding by Australian standards; 8 hectares of vines! That gives them the ability to be meticulous and spoil their vines throughout the year. The vineyard is densely planted with up to 6,000 vines per hectare at about 250 metres above sea level. It's also worth noting that the Nagorcka are pioneers when it comes to biodynamic farming, with everything from wine to wool to cereal crops fully certified. Christian has the following to say about his philosophy: “We are always endeavouring to manage our land in the best possible way to ensure that our products are of high quality". Throughout the years of using a more sustainable way of farming, they noticed the wines had more liveliness, fresh acidity and balance.
Why do we like it?
The range of Hochkirch wines is outstanding with a very good Riesling and Pinot Noir but we fell for the Syrah! This is cool climate Syrah that was aged in old French oak for about 18 months. It's an authentic expression of the grape and wonderfully smooth with fresh black plum, violet and black olives flavours. A touch of clove and licorice accompanied the polished tannins and the fresh and long finish, a wine of absolute pleasure!
