2021 Girlan, Pinot Bianco, Alto Adige

Situated right next to the Austrian and Swiss border and encircled by the saw-toothed Dolomite Mountains is this high altitude and cool region. Girlan was founded in 1923 as a small co-operative winery with 23 growers on their books. They are based in the heart of Italy’s beautiful, mountainous, Alto Adige region. Today they work with 200 families who farm around 215 hectares of vines (small in the context of the region), meaning the average grower holding still lies under a single hectare of vines.

At 550 metres above sea level, this wine comes from a single vineyard called Platt & Riegl. From gravelly, mineral-rich soils of the Appiano Monte, region known locally to be one of the best in Alto Adige.

Why do we like it?

We loved this Pinot Bianco from the first sip because of its freshness driven by acidity, its pure orchid fruit aromas, a fine salty tangy minerality and a long savoury finish. This wine is not meant to be aged, but to be drunk within 2 or 3 years, while its freshness prevails. Serve it chilled to about 12 degrees and of course, as always – in good company!
