2021 Two Paddocks ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir, Central Otago

Remember Alan Grant in Jurassic Park? It seems some people have it all, they excel at whatever they do. Two Paddocks was established by Kiwi actor Sam Neill (yes, Alan Grant from Jurassic Park) in 1993, Sam was raised in the South Island of New Zealand, and still calls it home. His love for wine pushed him to take a shot at making some. Initially Sam bought a paddock in Gibbston and aimed to grow a small amount of his favourite grape, Pinot Noir. He was simply aiming to produce enough wine for his friends and family. Back then, Central Otago was in the early days of winegrowing, so to buy and plant Two Paddocks was a huge leap of faith. Nowadays the region is planted 80% planted and has arguably been New Zealand’s most successful region with this variety.

Why do we like it?

Two Paddocks now consists of four small vineyards in the Gibbston, Alexandra, Bannockburn sub-regions of Central Otago. The vineyards are grown with a holistic farming model, which aims to naturally recycle all farm animal and vine by products back into composts and nutrient used to nourish the soil of the vineyard. The 2021 is a ripe expression offering richness on the mid-palate, with an incredible silkiness and hypnotising aromatics. Full of sweet cherries, strawberries, violets and a hint of dried herbs, it remains elegant and sophisticated with fine-grained tannins.
