Castello Monsanto owns some of the very best vineyards sites within the appellation of Chianti Classico. The winery was founded in 1962 by Fabrizio Bianchi. Fabio was one of the first producers to believe in the concept of single-vineyard wines in the region. Located in the hills of Barberino Val d'Elsa in western Chianti, the Monsanto estate dominate the valley below. The wines coming out of the estate represent some of the very best that region has to offer, it is considered one of the top 10 estates of Chianti Classico for good reasons. Today, Bianchi's daughter, Laura, runs the property, while Andrea Giovannini makes the wines.
Why do we like it?
Castello di Monsanto is in a warm pocket but the vineyards are well-ventilated by sea breezes and temperatures fall sharply at night. The Bianchi family have always used autochthonous grapes only for their Chianti Classico. In the Riserva, along with 90% Sangiovese, Colorino is added for colour and Canaiolo Nero for its floral bouquet. You can't resist excellent Chianti Classico, the Riserva is vibrant with clearly defined aromas of morello cherries, red currant, dried flowers and roasted savoury herbs. It possesses a succulent core with assertive tannins and a long, earthy and savoury finish where nuances of cedar wood and orange peel promise an appetising future. You can easily drink it now along with a Fagioli con salsiccia or your favourite pizza but it is also well suited for ageing!
