2016 Château Phélan Ségur, Saint-Estèphe

Château Phélan Ségur is an exceptional Bordeaux estate that beautifully showcases the distinct terroir of Saint-Estèphe.Founded by Irishman Bernard O’Phelan, the estate was developed by his son, Frank, and renamed Phélan Ségur in the early 20th century. It was bought by Xavier Gardinier in 1985 and run by his sons, Thierry and Laurent until 2018, when Philippe Van de Vyvere bought the property. The vineyards of the property are well located, close to the Gironde estuary, lying on well-drained gravel soils. Year after year the wines produce at Château Phélan Ségur are always impressive and ageworthy.

Why do we like it?

2016 was one of the latest ever harvests at Phélan Ségur. Feathery tannins and a fresh, ripe but crunchy aspect to the fruit gives a real sense of sensuality and concentration. We love the dark pepper and cinnamon spice that surrounds the fruit (blackberry, plum) on the palate. This is an excellent vintage for Phélan! It shows great confidence and real poise. It's full of life with silky, extremely velvety tannins and a slow build up to a juicy frame that catches the fruit. It is 7 years old and drinking very well at the moment but the impressive structure promises greater aging potential for another 5-10 years easily.
