2018 Powell & Son, 'Loechel' Shiraz, Eden Valley

Powell and Son is a recent project which involved Dave Powell (the man who founded Torbreck). The first vintage was 2014, when him and his son Callum decided to join forces and make wines not only from Barossa, but also from Eden Valley. They like to employ traditional and minimalist winemaking techniques to produce wines of typicity and balance. The wines are made from some of the oldest and most sacred vineyards in the country. Their inspiration has its roots in Franc's Rhone Valley since they use the classic Rhone varietals. The wines are exceptional and well worth the hype.

Why do we like it?

The Loechel vineyard was planted in 1970, at the southern tip of the region in granitic loam at about 400m of altitude. This altitude is super important for the vines to cool down at night and acquire some freshness. The wines are powerful, with big “shoulders”, wines that are intense aromatically with ripe black fruit, black berry, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. These are rich in fine tannins, smoky, savoury and meaty. The finish is balanced, long and persistent.

Due to the fact that this is a high concentration wine, we suggest it to be decanted in advance, it will allow for all these complexities to settle a bit with the exposure to air.
