Yarra Yering produces several different styles of wines notably their Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc blend (Dry White Wine #1), Cabernet Blend (Dry Red Wine #1), Underhill (Shiraz) and even a Touriga Nacional blend (Dry Red Wine #3), among others. Dr Bailey Carrodus unfortunately passed away in 2008, but will always be remembered as a pioneer in the Yarra Valley, where he founded Yarra Yering in the 1960s. He first completed a degree in horticulture and then later another degree in winemaking. Another of his passions was wines from Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, which saw him embark on a journey ending with some Touriga Nacional as the most "odd" in its vineyards.
Nowadays, Yarra Yering is very lucky to have Sarah Crowe as the chief winemaker… she is an award winner for her incredible talent. She is making wines like never before. Dr Bailey Carrodus would certainly be very proud of her.
Why do we like it?
In Australia, the Pinot Noir/Shiraz blend dates back from the 50s-60s and only a handful survived. It certainly is a classic from this great Australian producer. Fruit was sourced from the Yarra Yering Pinot noir block with plantings dating back to 1981 representing 50% of the blend and Shiraz was first planted in the Waterloo block in 1995, making the other 50%. The Pinot Noir brings delicacy, freshness, and fragrance to the more austere Shiraz, which is indeed more powerful in terms of tannins and body reflecting more black fruit, and a slight grounded black peppercorn. Profoundly delicious!
