Damon and Jono Koerner are two brothers who are making some of the most appealing and great value wines in South Australia. Deservedly so, in 2019, they won the Young Guns of Wine. The two grew up in the Clare Valley and for many years have learnt he art of growing grapes and making wines alongside their parents: Anthony and Christine Koerner. But they also have spent time working and living overseas as well, in Italy and France, they fell in love with Mediterrean varieties and a preference for unoaked, lighter wines. In Australia, the two have been at the forefront of the use of ceramic eggs for fermentation resulting in refreshing wines of incredible drinkability!
Why do we like it?
Let's say that the idea of making Sciacarello didn't come as a suprise for Jono, after making wines in Corsica, it was an obvious choice to make it in Australia. Problem is, there wasn't any planted here, or at least he thought so... Shortly after returning from his trip to Corsica, Jono was on the road and driving through vineyards in the Clare Valley when he saw a winegrower friend and thought to stop to ask him if he could buy some of his Sangiovese, but surprise, as this friend proposed him indeed to buy some Sciacarello!!! We have never seen another bottle anywhere in Australia but we can tell you that as soon as we tried, it was love at first sight. Sciacarello has a lot in common with Pinot Noir by its floral fragrance, great lift of aromatics and silkiness. The two brothers have excel here with a seductive wine with superb pomegranate and cherry notes and touch of sandy tannins. What a joy!
