2020 Bodega Noemia ‘J Alberto’ Malbec, Patagonia

Once the Malbec vineyard was discovered, the Italian Countess, Noemi Morone Cinzano, and the prestigious Danish winemaker, Hans Vinding-Diers, teamed up as partners to produce some of the finest wines in Argentina. Together, they proceeded to restore the old vineyard back to life by purchasing a small property and set to make a small vinification. The wine was bottled, brought by chance to a famous wine-fair and gained immediate notoriety, so they then decided to settle there for a bit and pursue their dream of making the finest wine possible thanks to those beautiful old plants. They partnered for 18 years in the project until recently when Hans Vinding-Diers, together with his wife and children, took over sole ownership of Bodega Noemía and the Countess is now concentrating on other projects in Europe.

Why do we like it?

This bottling is made of 95% Malbec and 5% Merlot with plantings from 1955. It spends 9 months in 30% second use French oak barrels, 30% third year French oak barrels and 40% in cement tanks. No new oak is used. It shows a deep inky colour, toasty aromas with blackberries and suggestions of coffee. Flavours of violets, cedar, rich black fruit, vanilla and overtones of rosemary. Finishes lengthily with sweet raspberries and great velvety texture.
