2018 Borgogno, Barolo ‘Classico’, Piedmont

Borgogno is one of the most historically important estates based in the township of Barolo. We seriously love Borgogno, these are classically styled wines that not only age well for decades but offer complexity and drinkability at fantastic prices. These wines grace the pages of the best wine lists and enoteca's around the world for good reason. Proprietor Oscar Farinetti has engineered a remarkable turnaround at Borgogno over the last few years while continuing to celebrate the estate’s historic past and produce wines in the similar traditional style. The vineyard size is about 30 hectares, from which about 60% is cultivated with Nebbiolo, with the remainder divided between Dolcetto, Barbera and Freisa and 5 hectares for white grapes.

Why do we like it?

The Barolo ‘Classico’ is a blend of the best vineyards of Barolo and it’s simply stunning, with lovely aromas of forest berry, rose, wild herb and violet jumping out of the glass along with a whiff of fresh leather. On the elegantly structured, almost ethereal palate, notes of star anise and clove support the juicy red cherry, pomegranate and blood orange. Polished tannins and bright acidity keep it balanced.
