Agiorgitiko grape is one of Greece’s most noble native varietals. In Nemea (Peloponnese), the wines are exclusively made from Agiorgitiko and are generally softly tannic with intense blueberry and black fruit aromas. The grape performs differently throughout the wide range of elevation and terrain in Nemea, but some of the most famous examples are made in the commune of Koutsi, where Gaia estate is located. Situated at 550m altitude, the winery was built in 1997 and is a contemporary industrial building with magnificent views of the plains of Nemea and the valley of Asopos River.
Gaia is truly one of Greece’s great small wineries, they hold vineyards in Nemea and Santorini, and produce some of the country’s most sought after wines. They also produce an excellent Assyrtiko.
Why do we like it?
This Agiorgitiko is fermented in oak vats and aged for 18-20 months in mostly old French oak. It is as delicious as it gets, showing juicy blueberry, dark cherry and red currants aromas with a touch of licorice and subtle spicy oak. The texture is silky and the tannin structure ensures that you could age it over the next five years in your cellar if you wish to. Serve it at 16-17C and cook a kreatopita, a Greek speciality made from ground beef with bechamel sauce spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon, all wrapped up in buttered phylo dough. The spice notes and the wine will complement each other perfectly.
