Henriques & Henriques started back in 1850 in Camara de Lobos, Madeira. Over the different generations, the Henriques family has played a very important role in the production of Madeira wine. They are known for being the only family to own vineyards in the region, allowing them to focus on very high quality, especially with their Sercial and Verdelho. Madeira fine wine at this level, represents less than 3% of the production.
Why do we like it?
Madeira has a very soft spot in my heart. I have been twice on the island, and both times were very special. Last time was in 2018 after attempting my Master Sommelier exam and passing that year the tasting portion of the exam. After finishing the tasting in Austria, I flew over to Portugal, picked up my mother in Lisbon and flew straight to Madeira for the holiday of the year. It was her birthday and first time in the island, so it was very special indeed!
Now, why do we love the Henriques & Henriques Sercial so much? Well, if you haven't tried it, please do so. It has an incredibly high acidity, is very oxidative, has lots of dried fruit and nutty aromas and flavours with a very long, smoky finish. It is intense and savoury. Sweetness? Yes, but very little due to the very high acidity played with cigar smoke and its nuttiness. Try a hard cheese with this, it is a treat!
