2020 Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhof Riesling Spätlese, Mosel

Now run by the 7th generation of the family, this estate has built a reputation for producing great sweet wines on the back of some outstanding vintages in the 1950's and 60's. It was officially founded as a monastery in 1335 and the Carthusian order cultivated the vineyards for over 400+ years before handing it over to the current family in charge. It is a truly historic property and is currently the eighth oldest wine-growing estate in the world.

Why do we like it?

The Karthäuserhof vineyard represents one of the finest vineyards in Germany.  It is extremely hilly with up to 55% gradient!  The Spätlese has more sweetness level than the Kabinett so it can be paired with savoury courses but also desserts.  It demonstrates an extra layer of texture; slightly oily, it will catch your mouth with all the great aromatics and purity that we like in this wine.  It also has more nuances and depth than the Kabinett but demands a bit more attention to drink it.  It is simultaneously serious and delicious!
