2020 Zarate Albarino, Rias Baixas

Rias Baixas is the leading wine zone of Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. As result of its high average rainfall it’s green everywhere which is why most of the vines were traditionally cultivated on pergolas to avoid fungal diseases. More specifically though, we are going to take you to Valle del Salnes, which is the source of some of the purest Albarino in the region. Zarate is a family which owns a property located in an estate which was built in the XVI century. The main objective of the company is a natural care for ancient vineyards and limited production of fine wines of exceptional quality. It’s been running through their blood for over seven generations! Indeed, the winery acts as one of the pioneers in the creation of vineyards planted with Albarino.

Why do we like it?

This is one of the best examples of the grape you will find around, not that light in texture as it is showing as more fatty and oily on the palate. The nose is promising and quite lifted with fresh lime, green apple, white peach and orange blossom. It is really refreshing but it does not lose its depth and intensity. It also has a great mineral expression and brightness; you can easily keep it for another 2-3 years as the acidity will keep the wine alive and fresh during that time.
