Esporão is one of the great names of Portuguese wine, and a true ambassador for the Alentejo — a vast, sun-drenched plain in southern Portugal where rolling hills of cork oak and olive groves give way to some of the country's most exciting vineyards. Why do we like it?
The Reserva is Esporão's flagship red — a blend of Aragonez (Tempranillo), Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet, matured for twelve months in French and American oak. The result is a wine of real depth and generosity: dark plum and blackberry fruit, warm spice, a touch of garrigue herbs, and the structure to age gracefully. Now with over a decade in bottle, the 2013 vintage shows the secondary complexity that makes mature Alentejo reds so rewarding — leather, dried fig, and a long, savoury finish. A benchmark wine from one of Portugal's most respected producers, and proof that the Alentejo deserves a permanent place in any serious cellar.
