2021 Clos la Coutale, Cahors, France

This Domaine is one of the oldest in Cahors, with records dating back to before the French Revolution. Philippe Bernede represents the sixth generation of his family to produce wine here. Over the past decade, Cahors has experienced a renaissance as people rediscover this remarkable gastronomic region, renowned for its duck dishes and some of the finest truffles in France. Clos La Coutale covers more than 60 hectares of primarily southwest-facing vines located around the Lot River. The vineyards consist of 80% Malbec, known locally as Cot, planted on a mix of gravel, silicates, and limestone clay, with an average vine age of 25 years. The wine blend is composed of 80% Malbec, 15% Merlot, and a hint of Tannat, creating a superb Cahors.

The vineyards benefit from southwest exposure on gentle slopes that lead away from the river, where alluvial clay soils contribute to red fruit notes and softer tannins compared to the higher plateau sites. Each parcel is fermented separately in tanks before being blended. The wine then undergoes a year-long élevage in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels and foudres.

Why do we like it?

It’s a pure, lively wine with lots of plum and red berries with a touch of liquorice to balance the sweetness of fruit. The tannic structure supports the fruit Could almost be an Argentine Malbec on the nose. But then drier and more savoury on the palate. Tannins and acidity are just right and support the fruit profile.
