2022 Nekeas ‘Cepa Por Cepa’ Garnacha, Navarra, Spain

The estate was founded in 1987 by Jorge Ordóñez and the vineyards were planted in 1995. Today wines are made by Concha Vecino, first Spanish female! Fiercely backing their wine-making roots in one of Spain’s finest viticultural corners. Her brilliance was entrusted with these vines from the beginning, crafting a beautiful range of elegant wines that deliver immense quality.

This ‘Cepa Por Cepa’ Garnacha, is of particular note is the valley’s ancient Garnacha genetic material, which Nekeas have massal-selected and grafted onto young vines to preserve its lineage. This unique red Garnacha has loose bunches of small, concentrated fruit that are perfectly suited to this cooler climate (growing up to 550 metres above sea level). Climatic influences include the trifecta of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the looming Pyrenees, with cool winds keeping heat down and disease at bay. Hats off to Nekeas; theirs is a brilliant and understated project.

Why do we like it?

Drink now, or drink in 5-6 years, at 15-16 degrees in nice large glasses, you may want to decant it before serving to allow aeration. Aroma-wise, the wine has a ripe strawberry, dried herbs and even dried red flowers. It has a warm and generous mouth feel with ripe and silky tannins.
