2019 Markus Molitor “Brauneberg Mandelgraben” Spatburgunder, Mosel

Molitor is a leading wine estate in the Mosel, Germany. Best known for its Rieslings and known as the “Mr 300 points” as in 2015, he received the highest score for 3 of his wines by one of the most influential wine critics in the world. The winery is based at the centre of Wehlener Klosterberg. It was purpose-built at the end of the 19th Century and acquired by Markus Molitor in 1984, who carried out extensive renovations between 2009 and 2012.

The Brauneberg Mandelberg is a classic Middle Mosel vineyard which features heavy, rocky slate soil, incorporating hard quartzite and gravel. The share of this site represents a genuine slope and reaches right up to woods, which facilitates access to water even in hot, dry years. Pinot Noirs from Brauneberger Mandelgraben convey pronounced spice, fruit, and finesse.

Why do we like it?

This is a beautiful Pinot Noir with silky tannins, delicate red fruit aromas, red roses and a slight white mushroom tone to it. Just like the whites from the Mosel, the reds are incredibly silky and elegant. A finesse that matches some of the best Pinot Noirs in the world. The wine is from the 2019 vintage, so already a few years of bottle which is very beneficial to this wine allowing for its acidity to blend with the tannins and its perfume all together.
