Casal Sta. Maria is based in the Colares region, on the dramatic, windswept Atlantic coast just outside Lisbon — proudly billed as the most western vineyards of mainland Europe. The estate's coastal vineyards benefit from constant sea breezes and unique sandy soils, producing wines with a distinctive saline, mineral edge that you won't find further inland.
Why do we like it?
This Malvasia has had over a decade to develop in bottle, and it shows beautifully — golden in colour, with notes of dried apricot, honey, beeswax and a touch of nutty oxidative complexity, balanced by the bright sea-salt minerality that defines the region. It's a wine with real personality, equal parts elegant and characterful, and a fascinating expression of one of Portugal's most singular terroirs.
