2015 Dry River, Craighall Riesling, Martinborough

Dry River was established in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum and was one of Martinborough’s first wineries. Named for one of South Wairarapa’s earliest sheep stations, Dry River rests on the very arid, gravelly, free-draining soils near the Ruamahunga River, an area known as the Martinborough Terrace.

The McCallums’ dream was to produce unique, high-quality wines that age beautifully and have remained the primary focus ever since. Even though it was bought by the Anderson family in 2003, the connection stayed between the families, and the mentorship of the McCallums is still felt to this day. Dry River is now a dedicated team of six. With small vineyards and limited production each year, they continue to sell directly to their club members first. Being able to source some back vintages is amazing for us and this will be a great addition to your cellar.

The Craighall vineyard was first planted in 1983 and provides linear structure and acidity to the wines. Lucky for us, it is one of the first New Zealand Riesling we tasted and it made a big impression on us! The wine really benefits from bottle aging, this 2015 is intense and focused, with honeysuckle, lime, and peachy character, but doesn’t verge into the austere acidity of the Clare Valley style. It’s a rich style of Riesling with a great mouthfeel of fruits and plenty of acidity to balance the wine, in some way it is also fun and frivolous. You could pick up a monkfish from the market, and cook it with Mediterranean flavors, because of the wonderful meaty texture, it will really work with the richness and age of the wine.

Why do we like it?

.At Dry River, there is a strong anchor on being connected to the environment that surrounds the vineyards, by eliminating all systemic pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides, they have become much more aware of how they care for this environment and what the threats are. They observe and respect the soils, flora, and fauna, and use practices that are sustainable and optimal for the site.
