2020 Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, Australia

Welcome to Coonawarra, 400km from Adelaide, it is renowned for its cool climate and Terra Rossa soil, yielding pure, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. The first vines were planted in the 1890s by John Riddoch, but the region gained prominence in the 1950s with Wynns.

Balnaves was established in 1975, is a family-owned winery in Coonawarra, South Australia. Doug, Kirsty, and Pete Balnaves manage 58 hectares, with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, on soils ideal for complex reds. Producing their own wines since 1995, they earned James Halliday’s Winery of the Year in 2008.

 Why do we like it?

The 2020 Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon, from Coonawarra’s famed Terra Rossa strip, is a structured, elegant wine. Co-fermented with 11% Petit Verdot and matured 13 months in 54% new French oak, it offers blackcurrant, dark chocolate, bay leaf, and violet notes, threaded with tobacco and herbs, supported by fine tannins.
