Burgundy has achieved what can only be described as insane prices in recent years and everyone wants a piece of it no matter the increase. At MS Wine Club, we are constantly on the lookout for the best that the region can offer. Having tasted them in London a few years ago, the wines of Domaine Génot-Boulanger just recently made it to Australia – which is excellent news for you!
The Domaine is run by Guilllaume Lavollee and his wife Aude, who is the inheritor of an estate that was founded by her grandfather, Génot, and his Boulanger wife. Guillaume met Aude in 2006 and came to do the harvest the following year, only to find that the vineyard manager had quit the day before picking was due to start and that he would have to make the wine that year!
Well, it seems that it worked out quite well in the end. The whites have gained reputation rapidly and the reds are following suit but some more work was needed in the vineyard for the Pinot, so it took a bit more time. The vines have been farmed organically since 2010 and certified since 2018.
Why do we like it?
The Volnay ‘Vieilles Vignes’ comes from adjacent plots located in Volnay at the foot of the hill and close to some 1er Cru vineyards with vines that are on average 70 years of age. In the warm 2018, the grapes have been 100% destemmed and age for 12 months in old oak barrels. It reveals the great side of Volnay: great finesse, silky texture and purity of flavours such as red cherry, raspberry, leafy character. It’s aerated and lifted with a touch of cloves and dried flowers on the mid-palate.
