The winery Klumpp, a family-run business, was founded in 1983 when the parents, previously in administration and banking, decided to change careers entirely and start making wine. Their journey began in a garage, producing just 800 bottles a year. By 2003, brothers Andreas and Markus took over the now 15-hectare estate, which has since grown to 32 hectares under their care. Using plant material from Burgundy, they personally oversaw this significant expansion.
Situated in Baden, Germany’s warmest and sunniest wine region, the Klumpp estate benefits from a climate shielded by the Vosges, Odenwald, and Black Forest. This environment, combined with diverse soils—predominantly limestone—makes it ideal for Burgundian grape varieties like Spätburgunder, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, and Auxerrois.
In the cellar, every detail is about refinement. All 190 plots ferment spontaneously and separately in stainless steel, with minimal intervention. Almost all wines are aged in barrels, many sourced from Burgundy, reflecting Andreas’s expertise developed at renowned estates like Christmann and Von Winning.
Why do we like it?
Gipskeuper shows ripe red fruit of cherry and pomegranate, wet earth and the ethereal kick of juniper and summer pine. Juicy and balanced with medium tannins and plenty of grip. This wine shows bright and pure notes, ultimately revealing a refine experience.
