2020 Hernando y Sourdais 'La Hormiga', Ribera del Duero, Spain

Bertrand Sourdais comes from a family of wine producers dating back 5 generations in his native Chinon, Loire Valley of France. However after visiting Soria in Ribera del Duero in Spain, the love was apparent and the recognition that this land and soils were capable of making amazing wines. Bertrand carries a huge history with him, from collaborations at Léoville Las Cases and Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, to working with Álvaro Palacios in Priorat, Spain, and Santa Rita in Chile to name a few.

‘La Hormiga’ means ‘The Ant’, is made solely by Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo. It is planted in clay and calcareous soils on the northern bank of the river Duero. The vines were planted in 1922 at an altitude of 950 metres above sea level. All organically farmed and manually harvested each year.

Why do we like it?

This is a wine with plenty grip, firm tannins, warm in alcohol yet elegant. Beautiful aromas of tart, sweet red cherries, strawberries and dried plums, there’s a slight dried flowers character as well as a fine fresh dill and tobacco leaves. The wine is very complex and is long lingering in the palate. It has ageing potential has the acidity and fruit is still very intense.
