2022 Bodega Chacra Chardonnay, Patagonia, Argentina

Bodega Chacra was created by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta in 2004, Piero is the grandson of the founder of Tenuta San Guido , the producer of Sassicaia, and Chacra is his personal project. The estate is located in the Rio Negro valley, half way between the Atlantic and the Andes, with plenty of alluvial soil left by the ancient glacier and by the river. Everything they do is Organic and Biodynamic, respecting the environment, therefore a “chacra” is a “special piece of land with vital energy centres that provide us with the ability to connect with the whole universe, with everything living and vibrating”.

In 2016, Piero started a new partnership with a hugely acclaimed producer of Burgundy: Jean-Marc Roulot! Jean-Marc was keen to have an experience making wine outside of Burgundy, so they decided on a collaboration to make a Chardonnay together.

Why do we like it?

Chacra had a vineyard of Merlot which never really fitted into what Piero wanted to do, so they bud-grafted this to Chardonnay, giving them an instant vineyard of forty year-old vines. The wine was aged in a mix of concrete eggs, stainless steel tanks and used French oak barrels for 10 months. It's generous and rich with lot of complexity. A hint of struck match, ripe yellow apple and nuttiness. It's a wine of character, with a beautiful weight, boldness with a lovely savoury toasty finish. Greatly put together, it is one of the best New World Chardonnay!
