2021 Girolamo Russo, ‘A Rina’, Etna Rosso, Sicily, Italy

Giuseppe originally thought his path in life would be completely different from his family’s winemaking legacy. He left his hometown, trained as a pianist, taught music and studied literature before realizing, following his father’s death, that his true vocation was one and only: making wines in Etna. Giuseppe Russo founded his estate in 2005 as a tribute to his father, Girolamo. It didn’t take long for his wines to gain a cult following among Italian critics and sommeliers. ‘Girolamo Russo’ is now a synonym for the vibrancy and purity of some of the best Etna wines.

Why do we like it?

The ’A Rina’ is what Giuseppe describes as his ‘Etna classico’, where Nerellos Mascalese and Cappuccio from different vineyards around the estate are co-fermented in stainless steel and open vats with indigenous yeasts, then malolactic takes place in barriques. The wine is matured for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and concrete tanks. That traditional way of making the wine gives such a great result: the wine displays an enticing aroma of red and black cherries, almonds, spices and balsamic. Fleshy and succulent, you can decant this wine for it to benefit from a bit of aeration.
