2022 Giant Steps 'Applejack' Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley

Giant Steps was founded by Phill Sexton, near Gruyere in the Yarra Valley. A mad jazz fan, Phil named the winery after John Coltrane’s album and fitting metaphor “Giant Steps”. The Applejack Vineyard is a special site, located on a dramatic slope in the upper Yarra Valley. It was planted by respected viticulturist Ray Guerin in 1997. In 2003, Winemaker Steve Flamsteed took over winemaking, and the two set about producing a range of iconic Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express a profound sense of place from six finite sites in Yarra Valley.

Why do we like it?

The Applejack vineyard is in Gladysdale, located at an elevation of 300 metres, it’s soil type is Grey clay loam over black basalt with a volcanic base. Its aspect is east-facing slopes. The size of the vineyard is 12.5 hectares. It was hand-picked, all fruit was chilled overnight to 12 degrees Celsius. Fermented in small oak fermenters and stainless-steel open vats. This is a delicious wine, with Burgundy character indeed. Smooth, soft and silky tannins, very elegant red fruit aromas of strawberries, raspberries and a touch of red roses.
