Polperro is not just about wine… have a look at their restaurant! Located in the Red Hill of Mornington Peninsula. The vineyards are certified organic in a high disease pressure, so hard work is demanded here. Red Hill’s soils are nutrient rich and fertile, which with the use of biodynamics, composting, integrating animals, cover crops, natives, and perennial planting, they encourage the soil web to thrive, and create balance and fertility within the soils. They strongly believe this is the key to regenerative farming and ‘farming for the future’.
Fruit was all hand picked and destemmed to avoid green notes, and in open fermenters whole berries were allowed to start fermenting naturally. After fermentation has started the wine is plunged 2-3 times per day for 15 days to extract more colour, tannins and even aromas. It is then pressed off skins and racked to barrel. 30 % new oak in predominately Sirugue (high quality French oak) with extra tight grain and light toast. The idea here is to micro-oxygenate the wines but at the same time add a layer of aroma to this beautiful Pinot Noir.
Why do we like it?
The wine reflects deep red-purple colour from great extraction, it is impressively intense and long on the palate. It shows concentrated dark-cherry fruit which really drives this wine. Powerful, dense, rich and supple in texture, the tannins are lush but ripe.
